The first simple rule(!) for selecting a gift for your valentine is, it should make him/her feel special and there should small element of surprise. If you have selected such a gift, mark my words, she would be swept off her feet. So, how should you make it special.
1. Customize:
You don't have to be a valentine buy a ready made gift in the shop. So, customize it. Add his/her photo, name, your selfies(highly recommended),etc. (If its a photo make sure your valentine looks great in that)
2. Personalize:
Add a personal touch to your gift. Write a poem(highly recommended) or your favorite moment with your valentine. Don't worry about the rhyming or fancy words in your poem. The very thought that you have tried to do something special for your valentine and you have put your time into it will make him/her happy (even if your poem is very bad!!).
3. Know her needs:
Of course, you should buy what she needs. The key is the gift you buy could not have been possibly bought by her or her friends now. No matter how small or big you buy, she should not even have a wild guess on it. The best way to do so is not to give any leads (even for misdirection!!) or hints.
4. Location:
Whatever the gift you choose, the location and the way you gift scores a lot on your valentine. Places like candle light dinner (highly recommended), the place where you met first and beach makes your valentine happy. Make it dramatic, even if you feel ridiculous about it (!).
5. How you give:
When you gift her, the one person who should be filled in her/his mind should be you. Just recite something you know and reminds you of all your relationship like first conversation, the things she says repeatedly, etc. This will remind her/him that you admire your valentine.
Let me just list down top gifts to your valentine:
1. Ring (Know size).
2. Pet animals (know allergies).
3. Apparels (size).
4. Collage of best memories.
5. Gadgets (fill with likes).suggestions: girlfriend

"From being my friend to being my date
It all started on this date...... "That's how that goes. Even if I know its ridiculous, I wrote her around 10 lines and she was very much impressed. So just start writing but refrain from quoting others... :)
